The NRWA offers two certifications for resume writers.
To become a Nationally Certified Resume Writer, a candidate must first prove their experience in and commitment to the resume-writing industry by completing the two-part sample review process. Candidates must first pass the NCRW Study Guide review quiz, then submit a sample writing package (resume and cover letter) for review by an NCRW Commission grader. This submission will be evaluated based on grammar, strategy, and adherence to the NCRW Study Guide. Writers who fall short of the NCRW standards are required to seek one or more avenues for professional development before they resubmit a new sample.
NCRW candidates must also prove their experience and commitment with evidence of recent training and development with the NRWA in the form of continuing education units (CEUs) earned through various webinars and trainings. CEUs can be earned prior to completing the sample submission or prior to taking the exam.
While not a prerequisite, in our experience those with the greatest chance of NCRW exam success have had at least 2 years of experience writing resume and cover letters, whether as a new or experienced business owner or as a staff member of a college career, workforce investment, or military transition center.
When a candidate receives a “ready” on the sample submission, and has earned at least 10 CEUs, candidates take part in a rigorous exam administered by the NRWA. Our exam, like our pre-qualifying process, is the most challenging in the industry. The only way a writer can earn the NCRW certification is by demonstrating a high level of expertise in resume strategy, business writing, grammar and punctuation, proofreading, and electronic resume preparation.
Upon receiving their credential, NCRWs have proven themselves over and over again to be the best in their field—a consummate professional dedicated to upholding the highest standards in the business. Subsequently, NCRWs are required to acquire CEUs annually to maintain their certification, which keeps them on the cutting edge of this ever-changing industry.
Nationally Certified Online Profile Expert (NCOPE) writers and coaches must complete a rigorous five-week training program and pass an end-of-course exam to show their expertise in crafting branded, engaging, conversational, value-based LinkedIn profiles, and display their understanding of the role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and the role LinkedIn plays, in today’s job hunt, career marketing, and social recruiting.
In addition, they must display LinkedIn Recruiter proficiency – the platform used by a majority of recruiters to find and vet talent. Last but not least, NCOPE-certified writers and coaches must show they understand best practices to find, build and nurture networks online, and how to leverage LinkedIn’s network power and settings as part of job search.
NCOPE certified writers and coaches must complete annual renewal training to ensure they are up-to-speed on LinkedIn’s rapidly evolving platform.
